Front Door Care: Tips on Keeping It Beautiful All Year Round

Your front door welcomes your guests and gives them an idea of what to expect inside your home. Along with the windows and the roof, it’s also one of the first things people from the curb will notice. If your entry door is dirty or damaged, your visitors—and passersby—may not have a good impression of your home (and your home-upkeep skills).

Front Door Care: Tips on Keeping It Beautiful All Year Round

To maintain curb appeal and make good impressions, it’s important to learn the right way to care for different types of entry doors in Tucson. At Dreamstyle Remodeling, we want to help you get the most out of your exterior doors. Here are some tips on caring for your doors:

For a Spot-Free Finish

Cleaning entry doors, particularly those from ProVia, isn’t difficult. All you need is a solution of water and mild soap. Make sure to rinse the surface well with water and wipe it dry. If you want to use a specific product, don’t forget to look into the manufacturer’s specifications for approved cleaning solutions for your door.

Use a mild liquid cleanser to remove scuff marks on a painted finish. For chipped or scratched surfaces, only use the recommended touch-up paint or a regular wood-finish repair crayon. For storm doors, a more in-depth maintenance regimen is necessary as they take a lot of abuse from the elements. It’s important to check it at least once a month. Additionally, after a storm, evaluate if the door has suffered some form of storm damage. It usually doesn’t manifest on the first day, so be vigilant.

Finally, replace your old doors if your existing ones can’t be restored any longer. Wood doors are usually among the earliest to grow old and usually last for only 15 to 20 years or so. For storm doors, we recommend our Legacy steel doors. Apart from their higher durability and weather tolerance, they have an excellent finish that allows them to retain their pristine appearance for a long time.

For Stunning Hardware

Your door’s hardware is as important as your door’s finish. If you don’t care for it, your door may not work properly. To maintain the hardware, use a nonabrasive furniture or automotive wax. You should also check for loose screws on the hinges and lockset. In addition, add a small amount of oil on the hinges, when needed. Make sure to wipe any excess. Adding oil ensures your doors will operate smoothly.

Additionally, check if the hardware is still functioning. Signs of disrepair are easy to miss since you don’t typically use all your doors on a daily basis. However, the knobs, locksets and handles do get worn down by the elements and by time and usage. If you notice that some of your door hardware is starting to lose its luster or functionality, give us a call so we can replace it promptly.

For Proper Seal

To keep your door airtight, make sure the weather strip is free from grit and dirt. You may use mild soap and water to clean it. You can also apply a thin layer of wax.

Entry doors, such as ProVia’s Legacy steel doors, are exposed to the elements all year round. Keep them in good condition for a long time by caring for them properly and regularly.
