Double hung windows and casement windows are two of the most popular replacement window styles available today. Double Hung Windows

Just about every American home ever built has had a double hung window at some point. Consisting of two operable sashes that slide along a vertical track, this classic design hasn’t changed much from when it was first introduced. While double hung windows are known to get stuck, especially when the wood frame expands, their modern counterparts have overcome this problem.

Replacement windows feature insulating frames that resist expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. Plus, the sashes can be tilted inwards for easy cleaning, making climbing your exterior walls unnecessary when cleaning upper-story windows.

Double hung windows are also great for small rooms that can only accommodate one window. An effective ventilation system requires two openings: one to vent stale air out and another to cycle fresh air in. While this can be accomplished using two windows, double hung windows can be opened in such a way that you have top and bottom openings.

Casement Windows

Casement windows have single sashes that swing outward, operated by a hand crank on the window frame. These windows are unique in that the entire window area can be opened fully, allowing the maximum amount of fresh air in. Since the sash presses against the frame when closed, it creates a tight seal, making it the most energy-efficient operable window style. Casement windows can also be built as a French-style window with two sashes that meet in the middle.

Traditional casement windows are opened and closed by simply pushing and pulling the sashes, but modern casement windows are operated using a hand crank. In addition to providing easy, one-handed operation, the operating arm also prevents the wind from slamming the windows shut. The open sash also works as an excellent breeze catcher if the wind direction is right.
