Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Shower

Any well-designed bathroom will have durable, moisture-resistant surfaces that can withstand daily use. That includes walls, floors, tiles, vanity tops, and shower spaces. Sooner or later, however, products wear down, lose some measure of functionality and aesthetic appeal, and may need to be replaced. The decision to replace any worn or outdated component can be personal, admittedly, and can depend on a number of factors, including your budget. But, as experienced remodeling contractors can tell you, there are certain signs that can indicate a replacement is the best course of action.

When it comes to shower spaces, you may assume that since guests rarely see them, replacement projects are hardly urgent and seldom necessary. After all, repairs can correct certain issues and are decidedly more affordable than a replacement. But are repairs more cost-effective in the long run? Because the fact is, minor blemishes or malfunctions today can be signs of underlying problems that can quickly worsen and lead to major failures tomorrow. To reduce the potential for a series of costly repair projects, it’s best to heed these obvious warning signs.

Faulty Shower Doors

Maybe your shower enclosure is chipped or cracked and, though this detracts from your bathroom’s appearance, you’ve managed to put up with the unsightliness. You should know, however, that small chips or cracks can expand over time and leave you with a bathroom full of broken glass. Also, shower doors that stick constantly or won’t slide as easily as they once did, can be adjusted or lubricated, but eventually, these fixes will no longer do the trick. For a more permanent solution, a shower replacement may be the better option.

Leaks & Water Spots

Water pooling on the bathroom floor or wet spots on the walls close to your shower space can be signs of a leak. While reapplying caulk around the edges of your shower may provide an adequate fix in some situations, these issues could also mean the pipes behind the wall have sprung a leak, in which case, you’ll want to keep a professional plumber’s contact information handy, and then consider shower replacement as part of your overall solution.

Stubborn Stains

As hard as you try, it seems almost impossible to completely rid your shower tiles, grout, and fixtures of stains, mildew, rust, or hard water deposits. Regular maintenance with a cleaning solution and a scrub brush can help, but once the problems become severe, no amount of cleaning can truly restore the gleam to your shower space. Also, be mindful that rust only gets worse and badly rusted fixtures stand a high chance of failing. For a bathroom that’s more visually pleasing, a new shower may be your best bet.
