Factors That Matter Most in Window Replacement

When it comes to wndow replacement, there are bigger decisions to make than merely choosing the type of window to install. Window style as well as decorative details do matter, but they’re not the most important features to achieve maximum energy performance.

To avoid regrets down the road, we at Dreamstyle Remodeling suggest focusing on these factors when tackling this home improvement project:

Glazing

Don’t replace in kind if you live in an old home with single-pane windows. Double-pane units are now the standard to meet ENERGY STAR®’s energy efficiency requirements. The small gap between the two sheets of glass contains an insulating gas that reduces the transfer of heat inside and out of your home.

Our replacement windows feature an inert argon gas blend. It’s one of the major contributors to the overall energy performance of our custom units. Unlike other gases, it isn’t sensitive to seal failure and doesn’t discolor.

Reflective Coating

Most, if not all, windows these days use low-emissivity (Low-E) glass. This invisible coating blocks the unwanted radiation from the sun and helps insulate indoor heat.

Like our glazed doors, our windows use a spectrally selective, multi-layer Low-E coating. It deflects far more infrared and ultraviolet rays than ordinary Low-E glass does. At the same time, it ushers in a generous amount of sunshine and virtually causes no effect on the clarity and color of the glass.

Construction

Window materials may look the same but are not equal in strength and performance. Inferior ones crack and bow with extreme changes in temperature and conduct energy easily. Plus, it’s no longer practical to invest in a material that requires periodic painting. You now have options coated with a finish that doesn’t chip, peel, flake or blister.

At Dreamstyle Remodeling, the frames and sashes of our windows are made from insulating composite material. This patented, composite material combines the best qualities of wood and vinyl without their drawbacks. It retains its weathertight seal with time, repels moisture to inhibit decay and minimizes heat loss.
