Home Improvement Tips – Part 2 – The Search for Window Styles

Selecting a set of windows in a style that goes well with your home’s currrent aesthetic can be challenging, but not if you focus on what’s important.

Window Styles

Your home’s architectural style

Does your home have a traditional theme that focuses on wide proportions and horizontal lines, or do you have something more modern, minimalistic, and compact? Different window styles will have different effects on the overall look of your home – both on the inside and outside. A good choice of windows can make any of your living spaces brighter and more interesting.

Don’t forget to factor in the color and texture of your windows. Aside from picking out the right window style, it’s also important that you pick the right color; one that will match with the rest of your home’s color scheme. Just remember that contrasting colors serve to highlight the windows, while more neutral ones make them blend in.

The window’s purpose

Some windows are just there to let sunlight in during daytime, while others are specially designed to provide a better view or to bring adequate ventilation into the home.  Some can even be used as an alternative escape route during an emergency. Think about where exactly to place a window, and why – the last thing you want is an awkwardly situated window, such as a picture window in a bathroom giving your neighbors an unobstructed view of you doing your business.

Operation

Double-hung windows have sashes that slide vertically. Gliding windows slide horizontally, while casement windows can be pushed or pulled open. This means some windows can operate well even in closed spaces, while others can provide the bigger openings we may sometimes need. Gliding or double-hung windows make excellent windows for above the kitchen sink as they won’t get in the way of the sink even when open. On the other hand, second-storey rooms can benefit from casement windows which can be opened inwards or outwards.

New windows are not only convenient, they also help you save money. Find out how as we head to the last part of this three-part blog series.
