Specific Door Parts: Getting to Know Your Door

How well do you know your door? Whether patio doors or entry doors in Tucson, they have parts that ensure function and aesthetics. Here are some common door parts and what they do:

  • Arch – This is the curved structure at the top of the door.
  • Door knob – This is the handle you use to open or close a door.
  • Door post/s – These are the two poles found at the sides of a door.
  • Doorway – This is the path of the door when it swings open.
  • Frame – This is the border around the door.
  • Glazing – These are thin, flat glass coatings on a glass door pane.
  • Hinge/s – The hinges fasten the door to the wall.
  • Mullion – Usually made of metal, stone, or wood, these create the illusion of divisions on a wood door, and make up the actual divisions on a glass door.
  • Pane – This refers to the piece of glass found on the door.
  • Spyhole – From the inside, this is where you look into to see who’s on the other side of the door.
  • Pediment – The arch is a kind of pediment. This is the general term for the decorative structure at the top of the door.

Here’s a holiday idea: Perhaps after reading this short list of simple parts, you can try to determine which is which on your doors. Turn it into a game during the holidays! You can even include everyone at home for a simple but informative activity.
