Aging-In-Place Bathrooms: Remodeling For The Future

Bathrooms are one of the few rooms in the house that don’t “age well”. It remains as a risky place to be, and that risk is magnified when you get older. So if you’re planning to do some bathroom remodeling soon, you should do it in a way that you’re preparing for the future. Dreamstyle Remodeling discusses how to remodel your bathroom with aging-in-place in mind.

Remodel the Doorway

One of the first things you should do is widen your doorway to give yourself around 36 inches of allowance for easier access to the bathroom. You should also replace the door knob with a lever so that it’s easier to open. Also, consider remodeling the door so that it swings out instead of in; better yet, get a sliding door so that there’s no chance of door blockage.

Consider Walk In Tubs

We recommend you replace your old shower or bath tubs with our more accessible walk in tubs. Unlike regular tubs, these don’t force you to step over the wall or rail of the bath tub. Instead, there’s a door that opens up to the tub. Walk in tubs also have seats so you can relax while you take a bath. Walk in tubs don’t just benefit the elderly; they’re safer for kids, too.

Install Handrails

Although it’s a “minor” addition, never forget to install handrails if you want an aging-in-place bathroom. It’s easy to forget that the floor of your bathroom is wet and still slippery, and installing a handrail in the right place can save you from a painful slip. We recommend installing these in areas where the floor area often gets soaked.
